Why can I not open AVIF files?
AVIF is recent, so browser support arrived well before desktop and marketplace software caught up. Many uploaders, editors and print services still reject it. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.
Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
Yes, usually noticeably bigger, because AVIF compresses better than JPG at the same quality. You are trading file size for compatibility, which is the right call when something needs to open the file.
Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?
It re-encodes once, at quality 90 by default, so the change is not visible in normal viewing. Any compression already applied when the AVIF was created remains.
What happens to transparency in an AVIF?
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white. Convert to PNG or WebP instead if you need to keep transparency.
Should I still use AVIF on my website?
Yes. AVIF is excellent for serving images on the web, and the compression advantage is real. Convert to JPG only when a specific tool or marketplace refuses AVIF.
