Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No, and this is the most common misconception about the conversion. PNG preserves exactly what the JPG contains; compression artefacts already baked in stay baked in. What it does is prevent any further loss from future edits and re-saves.
Will converting to PNG add transparency?
Not by itself. PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has no alpha channel to carry over, so the result is fully opaque. You would need to remove the background in an editor to create transparency.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores far more data than a compressed JPG, and several times larger is normal for photographs. That is the expected trade for lossless editing headroom.
When should I convert JPG to PNG?
