Wix Image Sizes

Upload big. Wix does the optimizing, but only from what you give it.

Last updated

Wix recommends a minimum of 3000 × 3000 px for product images, which is noticeably larger than most platforms ask for. The reason is that Wix optimizes aggressively on its own side: images are converted to AVIF on the live site and served at whatever size the visitor's device actually needs.

That flips the usual advice. On most platforms you compress hard before uploading; on Wix, the compression is handled for you, and your job is to supply enough resolution for the pipeline to work from. Uploading a pre-shrunk 800 px file just caps the quality Wix can deliver.

What you should still control is aspect ratio. The Wix Product Gallery looks clean when every image shares a ratio and messy when they do not. Inconsistent sources are the usual cause of images appearing cropped, especially on mobile.

Typical result: A 40 MB RAW export trimmed to a 3000 × 3000 px JPEG lands around 1.5 MB, well under the compress-first threshold, with all the resolution Wix needs.

How to do it

  1. 1Resize masters to 3000 × 3000 px rather than compressing them small.
  2. 2Use "Pad to exact size" so every gallery image shares one aspect ratio.
  3. 3Export as JPEG or PNG. Wix converts to AVIF on the live site anyway.
  4. 4Upload to Wix Stores and check the gallery on mobile for unexpected crops.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Wix product images be?

Wix recommends at least 3000 × 3000 px for product images. That is larger than most platforms ask for because Wix generates every delivered size itself, and a small upload permanently caps the quality it can serve.

Should I compress images before uploading to Wix?

Only if they are very large. Wix suggests compressing files above 25 MB. Otherwise resolution is worth more than a small file, because Wix converts to AVIF and resizes per device on the live site.

Why do my Wix product images look cropped on mobile?

Usually mixed aspect ratios in one gallery. The Product Gallery fits images into a shared frame, so anything with a different ratio gets cropped to match. Padding every image to one ratio before uploading fixes it.

Does Wix convert images to WebP or AVIF?

Wix converts images to AVIF on the live site automatically. You do not need to convert before uploading. Supply the resolution and let the pipeline handle format negotiation.

What image formats does Wix accept?

A wide range including JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF and RAW. JPEG and PNG remain the most predictable choices for product photography.
