BigCommerce Image Size

One upload size that satisfies every BigCommerce display slot.

Last updated

BigCommerce recommends 1280 × 1280 px for product images and derives every other display size (thumbnails, category tiles, cart line items) from that single upload. Get the master right and the rest follow.

The hard ceiling is 8 MB per product or variant image. That is generous enough that it rarely bites, but a batch of unprocessed camera files will hit it, and an 8 MB product photo is a Core Web Vitals problem long before it is an upload problem.

Square is the practical default. BigCommerce themes lay products out on a grid, and a catalogue with mixed aspect ratios produces uneven cards and inconsistent white space no matter how good the individual photos are.

Typical result: A 6 MB studio JPEG exports to roughly 140 KB at 1280 × 1280 px WebP, comfortably inside the 8 MB ceiling and fast enough for mobile.

How to do it

  1. 1Open the bulk resizer and add your product photos.
  2. 2Set 1280 × 1280 px with "Pad to exact size" if your sources are not already square.
  3. 3Export as WebP for the smallest files, or JPEG for maximum compatibility.
  4. 4Upload to BigCommerce. Thumbnails and zoom variants are generated for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for BigCommerce?

BigCommerce recommends 1280 × 1280 px for product images. Every smaller display size is generated from that upload, so a single square master at 1280 px covers thumbnails, grid tiles and the product page.

What is the maximum image file size on BigCommerce?

Product and variant images are capped at 8 MB. In practice you want to be far below that (under 200 KB) because page weight, not the upload limit, is what costs you conversions.

Does BigCommerce support WebP?

Yes, and BigCommerce's CDN also optimizes and re-serves images at the sizes your theme requests. Uploading a well-compressed WebP master still helps, because the CDN is working from your file.

Do BigCommerce product images have to be square?

Not technically, but the stock themes assume a uniform grid. Mixed aspect ratios produce ragged category pages, so square is the safe default unless your theme is built for something else.

How do I fix blurry BigCommerce product images?

Upload a larger master. If the file is smaller than the slot the theme renders, especially on retina displays which request roughly double, BigCommerce has no extra pixels to work with and the image is upscaled.
